Cecil Rice graduated in 1983 from Brighton Art College and is now a highly regarded artist, recognised for his compelling seascape and architecture watercolours. He has a passion for Italy and travels there regularly. He is fascinated by the contrast of light and shadow and the strength this gives his watercolours, this resounds throughout all of Cecil's work. Inspirations come from numerous sources, including his father Sean Rice, himself a respected sculptor, the “awesome” paintings by Turner, the work of The Norwich School, and the colour and vitality found in Emil Nolde’s work. Cecil usually sketches in graphite before applying colour, using his sketchbook he will often prepare or complete works on location, or once back in his studio, Cecil will work from Watercolour sketches as a guide to complete his paintings.
