Hakan Strand

Håkan Strand was born in 1959 and lives in Stockholm, Sweden. Most of his black and white photography is taken in low light at dusk and dawn when the interactive play between light and dark is most prominent. He often works with long exposures to reduce the landscape into elemental, graphic shapes. He likes to work in severe weather: snowstorms, mist, fog, dramatic grey skies. These conditions make the perfect ingredients for his atmospheric and sometimes moody works. Water is often present in his photographs, as are wide-open spaces and solitary trees. He likes to simplify, to extract unnecessary elements, to emphasise the subject he is working with. Håkan Strand’s award-winning photographs have been featured in several exhibitions and international magazines.
