Ryuijie Douglas was born in Otaru, Japan in 1950. As a young child, he moved with his military family to the USA and subsequently lived in various places, from Hawaii to New Hampshire, until his father's retirement. Throughout his childhood, Ryuijie showed a natural interest in art and his talent began to materialise during his military service. While stationed in Guam, he learned underwater photography while pursuing his long-time interest in scuba diving. After his tour, he returned to the USA where he attended college and began a successful career in lithography. This series of images features botanicals frozen in blocks of ice photographed in black and white with a large format camera. Ryuijie has steadfastly pursued his photographic vision for over thirty years and has acquired a reputation for his exquisite work, inspired by the natural world.
