Serge Mendjisky

Born in Paris in 1929, Serge Mendjisky was introduced to the world of art at a very young age. His father was a painter of the “School of Paris” and this encouraged him to attend the Beaux Arts in Paris after which he became an established artist. Despite starting out as a painter, Serge always had a keen interest in photography and used it as a preliminary study for his paintings. In 2000, he fully invested in photography as a final medium, using a collage technique to alter photographic images and force the viewer to question the appearance of familiar urban landscapes. Pablo Picasso was a close acquaintance due to his father’s involvement in the art scene of the time and was a significant influence on Serge as seen by the obvious nod to Cubism in his images.
