Wessel Huisman

Wessel Huisman is an elite Dutch artist. Born in 1954 in Breda, the Netherlands, Huisman graduated in 1981 from Radboud University Nijmegen. He completed his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Arnhem in 1984, becoming the managing director later that year and holding this post until 2006. After practising in various media, Huisman decided in the 1990s to focus solely on painting, a medium that he loves and respects. Wessel’s expressive cityscape paintings are about light, clarity and brightness. At the same time, all his works are about creating a sense of space and depth. He uses shades of grey, black and white layers to build up his paintings in a process that can take up to one year or more to complete. More recently he has incorporated other hues, like blue and red, to specify the “mood” of the light. Wessel’s works are in exhibits throughout Europe, including the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, and Italy where at the Florence Biennale in 2013 and 2015 he won the “Lorenzo IL Magnifico” prize. You can also see his works in China, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam and the USA.
